Cosmetic Dentistry SmileDiscover the many ways cosmetic dentistry can bolster your oral health.

Do you feel like your smile doesn’t improve your appearance but may, in fact, hamper it? Do you feel self-conscious about the way your smile looks because you have cosmetic flaws that stand out? If so, our Springville, UT, dentists, Dr. Stephen Pratt and Dr. Samuel Clyde, offer a wide range of cosmetic options, from simple tweaks to full-on makeovers, to help you achieve the smile you want quickly and easily.

Here are just some of the most popular cosmetic dentistry treatments that are guaranteed to give you a new and improved smile:

Dental Bonding

Who says that in order to improve your smile you have to go through invasive or time-consuming dental treatments? Dental bonding is a fast and simple way to hide minor gaps between teeth, as well as discolorations, chips, and cracks. During bonding, our Springville, UT, cosmetic dentist will apply a tooth-colored putty material over these small imperfections to cover them. Once the resin has been shaped, we will harden it into place with a dental laser. Bonding won’t be able to handle more serious flaws, but smaller issues can be tackled with this non-invasive dental procedure.

Teeth Whitening

This is by far the most popular cosmetic treatment because it offers patients a fast, effective, and easy way to get a visibly whiter smile in just one hour. Professional in-office whitening uses a highly concentrated bleaching gel that is able to target and break up stubborn stain molecules within the enamel and dentin layers to instantly brighten your smile. If you have yellow teeth due to age or from consuming certain foods or drinks, then teeth whitening might be what you need to get your smile back on track!

Dental Veneers

Do you find yourself admiring the smiles of some of your favorite television and movie stars? If so, chances are good that some of them have those perfect smiles thanks to dental veneers. These very thin tooth-colored shells are made from porcelain, which mimics the look of real tooth enamel. These shells are custom-made to cover the front surface of your tooth to hide imperfections while also improving the overall shape and alignment of your smile.

Smiling womanDo you wish your smile was straighter, brighter or undamaged? You can turn your dream into reality with a variety of cosmetic dentistry treatments designed to improve your smile. Dr. Stephen Pratt, Dr. Stephanie Winterton, and Dr. Christopher Flint of Hobble Creek Dental Care in Springville, UT, can tell a few treatments you may want to consider.

Teeth whitening

Professional teeth whitening lightens teeth by three to eight shades in an hour-long treatment in our Springville office. Hydrogen peroxide used to whiten teeth breaks apart dark pigments that become lodged in tiny pores in tooth enamel after you eat or drink dark or brightly colored foods. Teeth whitening results can last two to three years or longer, as long as you avoid stain-causing foods and beverages. Take-home kits are also available for at-home whitening or occasional touch up of your whitening results.

Braces for adults

Six Month Smiles, an innovative orthodontic treatment for adults, uses clear brackets and tooth-colored wires to straighten teeth that are visible when you smile. The treatment is less expensive than other orthodontic treatments and takes months, rather than years, to improve the appearance of your smile.

Veneers

There's no reason to treat your entire tooth when cosmetic issues only affect the fronts of teeth. Veneers consist of thin layers of porcelain attached to your teeth with dental cement. Veneers lengthen teeth, hide gaps, and conceal uneven surfaces, chips, discolorations, and cracks. They're also an excellent choice if you're looking for a long-term whitening option or want to change the appearance of an oddly shaped tooth.

Bonding

Bonding offers a simple, effective way to change the appearance of a tooth or repair damage. We use composite resin, a flexible material that hardens and bonds to your teeth when it's exposed to a curing light. Tooth-colored composite resin can be used to alter the shape of a crooked tooth, lengthen a short tooth, hide a discolored tooth, and conceal small cracks and chips that draw unwanted attention to your smile.

For some time now, you’ve noticed things about your teeth and gums — your overall smile — that you would like to change. But you’re in unfamiliar territory: you don’t know where to begin.

Here, then, are a few basic cosmetic dentistry questions you should ask yourself and us to get you moving in the right direction.

Am I a candidate for cosmetic dentistry? Invariably, the answer is yes — there’s always a way to enhance your appearance, starting with basic hygiene or whitening. But whether you’re a candidate for a particular procedure will depend on a full examination of your mouth — a “smile analysis” — to assess its current condition and needs, and what cosmetic options would best fit those needs.

Are my expectations realistic? That will first depend on what we find with your smile analysis. It will, however, also include studying the bigger picture — how certain changes might affect not only your smile but your overall facial appearance. Your wants and desires are extremely important in this process, but they should also be balanced with a dose of reality — some things may not be in your best interest health-wise to undertake, or are not in keeping with basic aesthetic principles of beauty.

Will I be able to have an idea beforehand how the changes will look? We’ve come a long way in providing patients ways to preview their new smile before undertaking a procedure. It’s often possible to “see” your proposed smile through computer simulation, or in some cases “test drive” it with temporary (provisional) crowns or veneers. For restorations involving porcelain crowns, it may be possible to take your input and fine-tune the shape and color of the permanent crown before it’s completed.

What will it cost? This will depend on the treatment plan we develop. Some treatments like teeth whitening are relatively inexpensive, while procedures like dental implants or orthodontics are major investments. You should also consider the costs to your time — some treatments require only a single visit, while others may take months or even years to complete. Depending on your financial means and comfort level, cost will need to be factored into the final plan, as well as your expectations.

DentalMagicTransformsSmiles

Magician Michel Grandinetti can levitate a 500-pound motorcycle, melt into a 7-foot-tall wall of solid steel, and make borrowed rings vanish and reappear baked inside bread. Yet the master illusionist admits to being in awe of the magic that dentists perform when it comes to transforming smiles. In fact, he told an interviewer that it’s “way more important magic than walking through a steel wall because you’re affecting people’s health… people’s confidence, and you’re really allowing people to… feel good about themselves.”

Michael speaks from experience. As a teenager, his own smile was enhanced through orthodontic treatment. Considering the career path he chose for himself — performing for multitudes both live and on TV — he calls wearing an orthodontic device (braces) to align his crooked teeth “life-changing.” He relies on his welcoming, slightly mischievous smile to welcome audiences and make the initial human connection.

A beautiful smile is definitely an asset regardless of whether you’re performing for thousands, passing another individual on a sidewalk or even, research suggests, interviewing for a job. Like Michael, however, some of us need a little help creating ours. If something about your teeth or gums is making you self-conscious and preventing you from smiling as broadly as you could be, we have plenty of solutions up our sleeve. Some of the most popular include:

  • Tooth Whitening. Professional whitening in the dental office achieves faster results than doing it yourself at home, but either approach can noticeably brighten your smile.
  • Bonding. A tooth-colored composite resin can be bonded to a tooth to replace missing tooth structure, such a chip.
  • Veneers. This is a hard, thin shell of tooth-colored material bonded to the front surface of a tooth to change its color, shape, size and/or length; mask dental imperfections like stains, cracks, or chips, and compensating for excessive gum tissue.
  • Crowns. Sometimes too much of a tooth is lost due to decay or trauma to support a veneer. Instead, capping it with a natural-looking porcelain crown can achieve the same types of improvements. A crown covers the entire tooth replacing more of its natural structure than a veneer does.

If you would like more information about ways in which you can transform your smile, please contact us or schedule an appointment for a consultation. You can also learn more about the techniques mentioned above by reading the Dear Doctor magazine articles “Teeth Whitening,” “Repairing Chipped Teeth,” and “Porcelain Crowns & Veneers.”

Does your smile bother you? Most people have at least one dental flaw they would like to change. Luckily, cosmetic dentistry treatments cosmetic dentistryoffer an easy way to get the smile you deserve. Dr. Stephen Pratt and Dr. Stephanie Winterton, your dentists at Hobble Creek Dental Care in Springville, UT, share information on several helpful cosmetic dentistry treatments.

Teeth whitening

It only takes about an hour to transform your smile when you choose in-office teeth whitening. Most people see a three- to eight-shade improvement in their teeth after whitening. Take-home kits are also available if you find it more convenient to whiten at home. At-home whitening generally requires using the trays in the kit for a few weeks.

Crowns

Dental crowns are used to treat many cosmetic dental issues. The hollow restorations look just like your natural teeth and are slipped over teeth after they're reduced in size slightly. Crowns conceal imperfections, such as chips, discolorations and pits; change the way twisted or oddly shaped teeth look; and lengthen teeth. They also strengthen and restore weak or damaged teeth and support artificial teeth in bridges.

Veneers

Have you ever wondered how your favorite movie star got that blindingly white smile? Veneers are probably responsible. In addition to whitening teeth, veneers are also used to conceal imperfections and oddly shaped teeth, close gaps and lengthen teeth. Veneers, tooth-shaped shells that fit over the fronts of your teeth, are available in a multitude of shades.

Composite bonding in Springville

Composite resin bonding repairs damaged teeth, hides flaws and is often used to change the shape or length of teeth. The material is soft when it's applied to your teeth, but quickly hardens when it's exposed to a special light. Composite resin is tinted to match the color of your teeth and is also used for tooth-colored fillings.

Dental implants

If you're looking for a more permanent tooth replacement option than bridges or dentures, you'll want to consider dental implants. Implants take the place of teeth roots and permanently bond to your jawbone. They're paired with crowns to provide a total tooth replacement option.

Not sure which cosmetic dentistry option is best for you? Call Drs. Pratt and Winterton, your Springville, UT, dentists at Hobble Creek Dental Care, at (801) 489-4541 to schedule an appointment.
